Facebook said on Tuesday its 350 million users can download a free six-month trial of McAfee’s Internet Security Suite, which protects computer users from viruses and other Internet threats.

Facebook and McAfee, the No. 2 maker of security software, have also co-developed a separate online tool that will scan and clean the computers of Facebook users which show signs of having fallen prey to an online attack.

Facebook said the scanning tool is being offered to its users at no charge. And it will not receive any revenue from McAfee if Facebook users purchase the McAfee Internet Security Suite software following the six-month trial.

Representatives of the two companies said in an interview that McAfee would advertise on Facebook as part of the partnership.

Facebook — along with other social networking services such as Twitter and News Corp’s MySpace — are among the most popular targets for hackers and cybercriminals. Criminals prey upon a false sense of security among their users who believe that these “walled gardens” of the Internet are immune from attack.

How to Get Protected

The deal between Facebook and McAfee introduces two significant security steps. The first step is McAfee is offering all Facebook users a free six-month subscription to its Internet Security Suite (along with a discounted price once the six months are up). Not a bad marketing deal for McAfee.

The second part of Facebook’s deal with McAfee is more interesting and innovative. Back in July Facebook created custom service that detects if your account has been compromised by a malicious third-party via a phishing attack. Now if that security trigger is set off McAfee jumps into action and will prompt you to use a free McAfee Scan and Repair program (see image below) the next time you log into your Facebook account. The assumption is, if your Facebook account has been compromised your PC may also be infected with malware.

Friendster, one of the world’s earliest social networking sites, will be sold to an Asian buyer by the end of December for at least $100 million, a source familiar with the matter said.

Friendster, which predates Facebook and MySpace in the social networking space was founded in 2002. But it quickly lost ground to other social networking sites in the United States. Friendster is now mostly used in Asia where more than half of its registered 100 million users are from.

Friendster will be sold to an Asian listed firm for more than $100 million in a deal set to be announced by the end of the month, said a source who declined to be identified as the information was not yet public.

HARDDISK

What Is a Hard Disk?
A hard disk or drive is the part of your computer responsible for long-term storage of information. Unlike volatile memory (often referred to as RAM) which loses its stored information once its power supply is shut off, a hard disk stores information permanently, allowing you to save programs, files, and other data. Hard disks also have much greater storage capacities than RAM.

Gmail Labs Introduces 039 Hide Read Labels 039 2 Gmail Labs Introduces Hide Read Labels

Gmail has just unveiled a new interesting feature in its Gmail Labs program called “Hide read labels,” which is just a small tweak but can prove very useful in some circumstances as it allows users to hide the left sidebar labels for the emails that they have read already. This makes for a less cluttered interface but also allows users to more easily keep track of their unread messages.
“A lot of people want to see their labels in order to see which ones have unread messages, but they don’t want a long list of label names cluttering up the left hand side of their inboxes. To help out with this, we’ve made a Gmail Labs feature called ‘Hide read labels’,” David de Kloet, software engineer at Google, wrote. “This is particularly handy if you use your inbox as a to-do list where unread messages are the outstanding things you need to take care of. If you use that method along with labels like “Home” and “Project X,” it’s easy to see all your to-dos in context.”

History of Internet

The Internet was the result of some visionary thinking by people in the early 1960s who saw great potential value in allowing computers to share information on research and development in scientific and military fields. J.C.R. Licklider of MIT, first proposed a global network of computers in 1962, and moved over to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in late 1962 to head the work to develop it. Leonard Kleinrock of MIT and later UCLA developed the theory of packet switching, which was to form the basis of Internet connections. Lawrence Roberts of MIT connected a Massachusetts computer with a California computer in 1965 over dial-up telephone lines. It showed the feasibility of wide area networking, but also showed that the telephone line’s circuit switching was inadequate. Kleinrock’s packet switching theory was confirmed. Roberts moved over to DARPA in 1966 and developed his plan for ARPANET. These visionaries and many more left unnamed here are the real founders of the Internet.
